Ex-RGS Man Who Won an Oscar

Postby John Saunders » Thu Mar 20, 2014 12:28 am

I wasn't previously aware that an RGS OW had won an Oscar.

JS (Jack) Stephens (RGS 1925-30) won an Oscar in 1981, jointly with Pierre Guffroy in the category Best Art Direction-Set Decoration for the film Tess, directed by Roman Polanski. He was mentioned in the May 1959 Wycombiensian as a film and TV freelance designer. He was also nominated for the same category for The Mission in 1986 but didn't win. A list of the films he worked on (many of them very well-known) can be found here.

He is already on Wikipedia and I am in the process of adding the fact that he was an RGS old boy.

Knew him well. His son is one of my best friends, as are his 3 nephews Stephen, Maurice and Simon Bird - all ex-RGS. His brother-in-law was "Dickie" Bird also ex-RGS.
