Scandal Magazine - Read It Online...

Postby John Saunders » Thu Apr 21, 2016 7:01 pm

I've been very quiet recently, working on a different web project, but today I received something interesting through the post - a PDF with issues 7 to 18 of SCANDAL Magazine. This was the famous/notorious 'alternative' school magazine from long before the adjective 'alternative' had this modern meaning. Run by the boys for the boys (and the girls - some Wycombe High School girls evidently contributed), and cocking an irreverent snook at all and sundry. The copies in the PDF file date from about 1959/60.

One of Scandal's founders and leading contributors, David ('Uncle Fred') Garnett, is a member of this forum and I'm hoping he will emerge from his long radio silence to tell us more, particularly about the '149' craze, about which he knows a great deal more than he has admitted so far...

EDIT: Biog note on David Garnett - according to his LinkedIn page, David was a university lecturer at the University of the West of England from 1974 to 2008, doing teaching and research in housing economics and housing. He's still working as a non-exec director and had a book published (A-Z of Housing) by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015.

David ("Uncle Fred") Garnett has now produced his promised oeuvre on Scandal magazine...

He hasn't as yet revealed the full, unexpurgated story of '1-4-9' but there are a few clues scattered about in the article.

In response to the question as to when 149 faded from active use. As a new boy in Autumn 1968, I had the privilege to have TVShepherd for geography in 1D: he was maybe not the most inspiring master of his generation (think Bulldog), but Tussss 149 was still for us a (half-understood) class-room mantra: we approximately understood that it was a number-plate, but had no idea of the Daimler...and there was no sense that you could bring the house down by mentioning that magic number...although Monty Python and Douglas Adams mined a similar vein in the same years.
