Old Wycombiensian Magazines Available Online

Postby John Saunders » Thu Jul 23, 2015 5:19 pm

Earlier this year Tony Hare made available some old copies of the school magazine, The Wycombiensian, as PDFs on his website. Here is the link:

http://www.rgs.tonyhare.co.uk/Wycombien ... sians.html

Tony's done a marvellous job of creating searchable PDFs of a relatively modest file size, so that they load relatively quickly but at the same time give you the chance to search through them for names, etc. The date range for his issues is 1936 to 1955, plus a synopsis of what was in the 1911 issue.

I've been wanting to do the same thing for ages but I was aware that the technology I had available wasn't up to the task so I have been dragging my heels. If Tony is the hare, then I suppose I must be the tortoise... anyway, I made a smart move - if in doubt, ask Tony how to do it. I already had a decent scanner but the software that came with it was very basic. He pointed me in the right direction, namely some good quality optical character recognition scanning software called Abbyy Fine Reader. That proved to be the breakthrough: I bought a copy of the software and am now able to create searchable PDFs which work well online.

I've made a start on digitising my collection of Wycombiensians, for the date range 1957 to 1972, and uploaded some of them...

It will take me a little while to complete this task but you should start seeing more and more PDFs available at this page over the coming days and weeks.

You will notice that there are a number of gaps in the catalogue: if anyone has one of the missing issues, I would be very grateful for a borrow.

EDIT: I've just amended the title of this thread. It suddenly dawned on me that 'Old Wycombiensians Available Online' might have an alternative meaning!

I'm gradually adding copies of the Wycombiensian to the website, here:

Another one (May 1964) added today, 14 August.

Three more old Wycombiensians went online today: May 1959, April 1960 and September 1961. Many thanks to Martin King for lending me these issues.

I still have 14 of my own collection of Wycombiensians to scan and put online, ranging from 1965 to about 1972, and that will take me some time. After that I would very much like to feature some more recent Wycombiensians, preferably starting with the May 1971 issue which I have never seen, up to about 1980. Can anyone lend me copies of any of these?

The number of Wycombiensians available online on my site has now swelled to 23...

... and I still have eight more to be scanned and uploaded.

That will take me a little while yet (I've a busy time doing other things from now until Xmas).

Has anyone got any Wycombiensians they can loan me from May 1973 onwards? I'd like to increase the number of online issues available. Also, how about some much older ones? Tony Hare already has a very good selection at his website, but some more elderly editions would be very welcome.

I've now completed the task of uploading PDFs of all the Wycombiensians in my possession, plus various copies I have been lent by Martin King and Mervyn Darville (for which many thanks)...

http://www.rgs.saund.co.uk/wycombiensians.html

So the current range available is September 1957 to September 1972 inclusive (31 issues in total). Another 21 issues of earlier Wycombiensians can be read at Tony Hare's website.

Can anyone lend me any issues of the Wycombiensian dating between Spring 1973 and the present time? They will be well treated and returned to you immediately after scanning. Thanking you in advance...
