Re: Ex-RGS Man Who Won an Oscar

Knew him well. His son is one of my best friends, as are his 3 nephews Stephen, Maurice and Simon Bird - all ex-RGS. His brother-in-law was "Dickie" Bird also ex-RGS.

Re: Leslie Joseph Ashford (1912 - 2007)

One of the nicest of teachers at RGS. History wasn't my forte, but made much more tolerable by Mr. Ashford. I well remember (but why?) that I only got 13% in History in "O" Level mocks in 1958, but concentrated on my weak subjects and passed with 60% in the final.

Re: 1960/1962 Exam Papers

Looking at the chemistry exams - these were very difficult - although I passed chemistry O and A level and went on to degree level. I am certain students nowadays would be shocked to be presented with exams like these. I wonder why "multiple choice " questions took over - to me they are ju...

Re: The extraordinary chemistry master - W.A.Booth.

John - I am sure you are correct about W.A.Booth - he was a "Student Teacher." Perhaps that's why he was so played up by us terrorists. What a dreadful introduction to the teaching profession we gave him!

The extraordinary chemistry master - W.A.Booth.

Probably in 1956-7, we had a new master arrive to teach chemistry. His name was W.A.Booth. He was rather strange looking man and was obviously going to pulled to pieces by us schoolboy terrorists. He immediately became know as WAB of course, but that morphed into "Wabster Booth" after the ...

Re: The only girl to attend RGS?

What a very positive report from Ms. Ellis on RGS! I was interested to follow your link and read about the "mass-caning" in 1950. I wonder what inspired that! I had a similar experience on a much smaller scale with the Boss in about 1957:- We were in 5A, I would guess. It was morning assem...

Re: The only girl to attend RGS?

"sex had not been invented at that time" - nice turn of phrase - I know what you mean! We knew about it, but it wasn't in your face (oops, sorry).

The only girl to attend RGS?

Around 1958-9, most RGS pupils were somewhat surprised to find that they had one female pupil in their midst - Miss Helena Ellis. She was at the Wycombe High School for girls but wanted to study Greek as far as I remember and Wycombe High didn't offer it, so she became a part-timer at RGS. As I was ...

Re: Tylers Wood Boarding House 1955 Photo

John: You have question marks behind George Moss and "Heddy" Hardstaff. I can confirm that these are the correct names. Re. Steve Mardell: I followed your link. Very hard to see if it's the same Steve Mardell. I remember being very impressed how he built has own guitar in the confines of t...
